Accounts of Culbin

In the years following the Great Sand-Drift, Culbin and the story of the disappearance of the village have continued to fascinate people.  One of the earliest published accounts, from 1769 (some seventy years after the Sand Drift) came from Thomas Pennant in his celebrated three volume series A Tour of Scotland. (above).  It was this account which first recording the story of the chimneys of the mansion house becoming visible and some brave soul shouting into it.

A History of Moray and Nairn 
​Charles Rampini

A century later, in the middle of the nineteenth century, Charles Rampini (1840-1907) an eminent Scottish antiquarian, wrote a detailed account of Culbin, the Kinnaird family and the destruction of the estate in the Great Sand Drift.  It was published in his History of Moray Nairn (1897).
